AEGIS BMD
Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (Aegis BMD) Project is an element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System, and is being developed to provide a rapidly deployable, highly mobile defensive system capability against short-to-intermediate range ballistic missile attacks on population centers, debarkation ports, coastal airports, amphibious objective areas, expeditionary forces, troops, friends, and allies.
Forward positioning of the ship makes possible a missile defense that will protect vast areas, often-entire countries. The Aegis BMD element of the BMDS builds on the proven Mark 7 Aegis Weapon System including modifications to the Standard Missile, and the Mark 41 Guided Missile Launch System.
